The U.S. Department of Energy's Record-keeping arm issued very encouraging data this week which should give a boost to many of the companies developing their uranium properties in the United States. Leaders with more solid prospects include Strathmore Minerals (TSX: STM PINKSHEETS: STHJF), UR-Energy (TSX: URE), Uranerz Energy (OTC BB: URNZ) and Energy Metals (TSX: EMC). The U.S. government uranium report will also help to strengthen the efforts of the more speculative uranium explorers and developers, we already have about written, including Kilgore Minerals (TSX: FE), Max Resources (TSX: MAX, OTC BB: MXROF) and Northwestern Mineral Ventures Inc. (TSX: NWT; OTC BB: NWTF), which intend to explore for its U.S. uranium-mineralized assets.
The Energy Information Administration (EIA) released its annual domestic Uranium Production Report on Monday, the U.S. uranium production industry turnaround lasted until 2005. Drilling, mining, concentrate production, employment and expenditure growth in the years 2003 and 2004. U.S. Uranium Mine Production was the highest since 2000, but remains below the period 1995-1999. Sustained growth in this sector is likely based to the increasing uranium spot price, which more than 500 percent since then.
U.S. mined uranium produces an estimated 3 million pounds of uranium oxide (U3O8), 24 percent more than in 2004. Estimated U.S. uranium concentrate (yellowcake) in 2005 was 2.7 million pounds of U3O8, 18 percent more than in 2004. Domestic production mills and in-situ devices sent for recovery are estimated at 2.7 million pounds of uranium concentrate, in the last year.
Rose in 2005, employment in the uranium sector by 52 Percent over the previous year. Drilling for uranium, production, land and other costs by 54 percent in 2005 rose compared with 2004. Companies spent an estimated 16.4 million U.S. dollars in 2005, which from 1997 to 1998. Surface drilling, as measured in millions of meters, 1.7 million feet of most since 1999. Employment in person-years was estimated at 638, the highest employment rate since 1999, but well below four digits of the number of jobs between 1995 and 1998. The largest percentage increase in jobs came from Arizona, Utah and Washington State, but had the largest number of person-years in employment from Colorado and Texas. Wyoming, New Mexico, Nebraska, and showed a slight increase in employment.
Exploration activity was. The number of holes for Uranium exploration in 2005 increased by 47 percent over 2004. Agriculture spending nearly doubled 2003rd These were the costs of land acquisition, Geological Survey, geochemical, geophysical Investigations, and the costs of field staff in the course of exploration, reclamation and restoration work (plus overhead and administrative costs associated with monitoring and support of field activities).
The largest percentage increase came from the dollar and production costs, mining, milling, uranium processing and include management of facilities. The estimated cost is more than doubled in 2005 compared to last year. This last step increases confirmed that the uranium exploration, Development and production companies are preparing for a successful 2006 and beyond.
While production was modest in comparison with the world power house Producers such as Australia and the Athabasca, the EIA report reminded us of the capacity of the various U.S. institutions. While U.S. utilities charge between 50 and 60 Millionen Pounds of uranium to fuel reactors, the production of domestic uranium industry, but a fraction of what is needed. Total "existing" maximum production of in situ uranium recovery approximately 8.8 million pounds per year. U.S. utilities must begin to look on the annual report next year. Time is the promotion and the small domestic uranium industry support, but above all the United States available uranium supplies for nuclear power fleet.
An interesting EIA report last Thursday confirmed what we already wrote. In 2006, the U.S. utility companies for more than 60 million pounds of uranium fuel nuclear power plants have closed of the country. Looking to 2007, they have taken only for 45 million pounds under contract. In 2008, the contracted number of dips below 30 million pounds. For the period from 2009 - 2010 U.S. utilities have contracted for approximately 10 million pounds per year, averaged over these two years. Far below the minimum requirements for the uranium fuel elements for nuclear reactors in the country. This should reaffirm that the U.S. uranium bull market has barely begun-.
